Institute of Research Training
The Academic Board recommended to Council (via Legislation Committee) that should Council approved the establishment of an Institute of Research Training, that a new Regulation 2.9(5)—Institute of Research Training be made.
Excellence in research for Australia
The Academic Board discussed various matters regarding the Excellence in Research for Australia Initiative and supported the official response by Deakin. The response has taken feedback from faculties into consideration.
Academic engagement
The Chair reported on various changes as a result of the informal meetings with the professors of each faculty. These changes include initiatives to promote interaction, collegiality and academic engagement. The Academic Board noted the all professors and faculty representatives on the Board are encouraged to disseminate information to the wider University community regarding discussions at Board meetings.
Trimester academic year
The Academic Board was advised of the current round of information sharing sessions regarding the trimester academic year currently being undertaken by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) with divisional heads, heads of school and other specific areas of the University.
The Board also discussed a report prepared by the Research and Research Training Committee that explored the potential implications on the trimester academic year on research and research training.
Review of Australian Higher Education discussion paper
The Academic Board had an extended discussion of the Review of Australian Higher Education Discussion Paper (the Bradley Review) and provided valuable feedback for the Vice-Chancellor in developing the University’s response to the Discussion Paper.
Annual self-review of the Academic Board
The Academic Board approved a process and timeline for the annual self review of its performance and that of its standing committees.
