Film and Video

Overview

The film and video industry is undergoing a period of massive change and unprecedented growth. Demand for film and video content has increased exponentially in a visual communication driven and knowledge rich society. The proliferation of screen content requires more producers, directors and independent freelancers. Digitalisation is such that video technology now rivals film. Indeed, the main outlets for film are no longer the "traditional" cinemas, but rather televisions, desktop computers, laptops, iPods and mobile phones.

The Deakin University Film and Video program stream is designed to meet this growing demand by providing postgraduate students the opportunity to create content across evolving and diverse distribution platforms, and to acquire the entrepreneurial skills necessary for creating their own employment in this vibrant and exciting industry. The program is unique because the projects and work that students will produce matches the opportunities for short film exhibitions throughout Australia and overseas.

The Master of Film and Video stream offers students opportunities to specialise in specific skills and to undertake projects in a range of contemporary forms. The program stream can be tailored to cater for both those who have studied film studies, mass media or media arts at the undergraduate level as well as graduates with no background in film and video production.

The focus of the Graduate Certificate is the completion of a short film. Students are engaged in the analysis of short film form and structure, the development of a screenplay, and then the production and postproduction of the work. Along with the completion of a short film, the Graduate Diploma provides students with opportunities to develop specific skills (such as cinematography, scripting, direction, production), that can be applied in a production, or to make work in a variety of short film genres, such as a sponsored documentary, a television commercial or an autobiographical statement. The Master Degree program allows students to acquire both specific skills and an eclectic range of film and video industry knowledge, and to apply them in a variety of productions.
