Students have the option of studying a major in economics, international business or international trade. Economics is the study of how individuals, firms, governments and other decision makers make choices about how they should use resources. As such economics is the fundamental discipline underpinning the study of most of the other business and commerce specialisations. Economics provides graduates with an enormously flexible degree that can provide the background for careers in industry and finance in roles such as analysts, forecasters, researchers and managers
Economists work in a wide variety of careers. This occurs because the training one receives as an economist can either focus on the economy or on economic aspects of a wide range of issues. The standard training of an economist in Australia is based around the undergraduate degree in economics, commerce, business or some cognate discipline. At the completion of such a degree, economists have two major career paths to follow.
Typically, economists work as generalist managers in large corporations, government and large business in the public and private sector. Graduates can also be found working in Australia and overseas undertaking roles in trade promotion, market development and general business management. The opportunities for economists are wide and varied.
The Australian Economics Society is the principle professional organisation of economists. It was established in 1925 and is affiliated with the International Economics Association. Any person with an interest in economics may apply for membership.
The Society publishes several journals, including the Economic Record, runs conferences, meetings, professional refresher sessions and the like.
