The annual Higher Education Research Data Collection (HERDC) conducted by the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST), measures research output in order to calculate the amount of funding for research awarded to each institution. All research publications by staff and students are to be reported. Collection forms and the current Deakin Guide to Reporting Publications are available on the Research Services Publications Forms and Guidelines website.
Links to the DEST Specifications for the HERDC, Register of Refereed Journals and Register of Commercial Publishers, the Research Fields, Course and Discipline Codes (RFCD) and the ISI Indicies and Ulrich's Periodicals Directory, are available on the Research Services Publications Collection Links website.

Deakin University also collects publication data in many additional categories for the annual Research Report and to calculate the internal distribution of research funding to the Faculties. The full list of research output categories and definitions for the HERDC and Deakin collection is listed in the current Guide to Reporting Publications, available from the Research Services Publications Forms and Guidelines website.
Reported research publications are also used for applications for research support, including Overseas Conference Leave, research grants and OSP, and for academic promotion. Staff webpages usually link directly to their list of reported publications.
Significant research achievements, other than publications, may be recorded under category 'Z'. Such achievements are not reported to DEST and do not accrue a weighting for the distribution of research funding to the Faculty, but will appear as part of the research record for individual researchers, Schools and the Faculty.
To submit an item for category Z, please complete an author proforma for each item, as required for publications, and attach evidence of the significant research achievement, for verification purposes. Examples include:
When you report your publications to the Faculty Research Manager they are included in the Deakin University annual research reports. These are available from 1997 onward and include an overview of research, Faculty research activities and research output.
Visitors can search the research reports by year, researcher, or by School and Faculty for a specific year.
