TextbooksYou can find out what textbooks are prescribed for any unit through Books 4U (formerly Unitexts) website online or by going to a bookshop on-campus. You can also order your textbooks online or by phone from Books 4U and have them shipped to you.
The prescribed texts are also listed in your unit guide. This will be available on DSO-Deakin Studies Online two weeks before the start of semester. You need to be enrolled to access DSO.
Each unit is usually designed around one or two commercially available textbooks. Most units list both prescribed and recommended textbooks. You are expected to buy the prescribed texts. As a rule the library does not hold prescribed unit texts in its collection.
You are not obliged to buy the recommended texts. The library will stock a limited number of these texts for you to use. If you do decide that you would like to purchase any recommended text, the bookshops will be able to order it if it is not in stock.
On-campus students have the option of purchasing the Faculty-produced study materials to complement their lectures and tutorials. These are available at cost price through the University bookshops. Off-campus and fee paying students receive these materials in their pre-semester mail-out. Study guides are also available on DSO-Deakin Studies Online.
The University begins mailing out course materials for off-campus units 6-8 weeks’ prior to the start of each semester. This process continues right up to the start of semester. If you are an off-campus student and have not received your materials by the start of semester contact:
