advanced standing
A collective term including both credit transfer and credit for prior learning. It means credit granted towards a course at the University for relevant approved study, experience or work satisfactorily completed at the University or elsewhere

The census date for a unit is the date on which enrolments in a unit are finalised. It is the last date on which a student can:
  • apply for HECS-HELP or FEE-HELP for the unit
  • withdraw from the unit without being liable for HECS-HELP or FEE-HELP (domestic students) or for the full tuition fee (international students)
  • withdraw from the unit without a reference appearing on their academic transcript

The weekly timetabled lecture, tutorial, workshop or practical work sessions approved for each unit or component of a course
corequisite
One or more units that must be completed by a student prior to or simultaneously with a particular unit before the student's enrolment in that unit will be regarded as effective. These are generally specified in the handbook
course
A set of units approved by the Academic Board, comprising credit points to a particular value which, when satisfactorily completed by a student, usually entitles that student to the award of the appropriate certificate, diploma or degree. A complete body of prescribed studies that make up a curriculum
course grouped units
Units approved by a faculty board as being central to the course leading to the award of a degree, diploma or certificate
course completion
The satisfactory completion of the specified number and sequence of units (including prescribed or elective units) which usually entitle a student to an award of the University
course transfer
An application form for students who have commenced studies in an award course at Deakin University and wish to apply to transfer to another course within Deakin
CPL
Credit for prior learning: The recognition of knowledge, skills, attitudes or other attributes that have been acquired through uncredentialled or other informal learning. Credit for prior learning may be awarded at the faculty's discretion, in the form of specified or unspecified credit. The term used for CPL at Deakin in policy etc. is advanced standing
CQI
Continuous quality improvement
credit point
A measure of workload. One credit point represents one-quarter of a full-time student's normal workload during a semester
credit transfer
The transfer of credit to a Deakin award for completed or partially completed studies in other accredited or credentialled programs

Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students

Customer relationship management system
cross​-institutional enrolment
Formerly "complementary enrolment". An enrolment approved in advance by a faculty, in units or components offered at another institution which, on successful completion, will be credited towards an award of the University. Enrolment at the University in units or components which, on successful completion, will be credited towards an award of another institution is also a form of cross-institutional enrolment

Dean
A Dean is an administrator in charge of a division of a university or college who are responsible for the active leadership and integration of the activities of the Faculty's schools and centres, and for encouraging and promoting a sense of unity, cooperation and common purpose amongst the Faculty's staff. Deans are directly involved in the strategic planning activities of the University and are responsible for determining the allocation of resources within the faculty, in consultation with the Heads of each School, Assistant Deans and other senior members of the Faculty
deferral
The approved postponement of study for a specified period prior to the first enrolment in a course
degree with distinction
Undergraduate students commencing post 1 Jan 2002 may be eligible for a degree with distinction if they achieve or exceed an average grade of 70 per cent across their degree and complete a minimum of eight credit points or one third of the credit points required for award of the degree, whichever is greater at Deakin; and are not part of an honours program

Encumbrances limit students' access to services provided by the University. Such encumbrances block provision of a range of important services, such as library access, result release and graduation
enrolment officer
A person appointed by a Dean to provide advice on a student's proposed course of study and to approve that course of study when it complies with the requirements of the relevant course

Guaranteed ENTER
The Guaranteed ENTER is a score (for current year 12 students) above which the student will be guaranteed entry into a fee-paying place in a course at a particular campus, provided they have applied on time through VTAC. There are no guaranteed ENTER scores for Commonwealth Supported Places. However, the Guaranteed ENTER will be set below the anticipated Clearly In ENTER, the ENTER score above which every year 12 student who applied for that course and was eligible is offered a Commonwealth Supported Place
Guaranteed Transfer
If an Australian fee-paying student has completed a minimum of 8 credit points (equivalent of one year full-time study), and achieved a weighted average mark of 65 in the last 8 credit points, they will be guaranteed a transfer from a FPP to a CSP

A thematic area of study, usually of one or two semesters duration. Units may have a value of between one and eight credit points
unit chair
The person appointed by a faculty board to oversee (chair) the assessment panel for each unit
unit codes
Code consisting of three letters and three numerals, used to identify units. The unit code should be quoted along with unit title when referring to any unit. first letter indicates the faculty offering the unit
  • second letter indicates the school responsible for the unit
  • third letter indicates the discipline area within which the unit falls
  • first numeral indicates the level of study
  • second and third numerals signify a particular syllabus
