Email addresses

All students have a Deakin email address that uses the format of username@deakin.edu.au (where username is your actual Deakin username and the rest is the standard Deakin identifier). You will need to know your Deakin username and password to access your email. Due to the large number of email addresses at Deakin, the process of generating new usernames and email addresses is automated and it is generally not possible to change a student username once it has been created.

The majority of Deakin staff have an email alias of the form firstname.surname@deakin.edu.au. Those staff with duplicate names are allocated an email alias that is a slight variation of this form. Staff email aliases appear in the Deakin Directory of Staff .

Email signatures

All students are encouraged to include an email signature, based on this approved format:

Deakin University does not warrant that this email and any attachments are error or virus free.

Webmail

You can use Deakin's Webmail facility from anywhere in the world with access to the Internet - at home, in the computing labs on campus or an internet cafe in Hong Kong.

Point your web browser to www.deakin.edu.au/webmail/ and login with your Deakin username and password.

See the Using email @ Deakin (115K) help sheet for more information.

Spam

Unsolicited or junk email, commonly known as spam, is becoming more prevalent as the use of email grows. The University has instigated a mechanism whereby most spam from external sources never reaches the University’s email server.

Occasionally some SPAM may still sneak through. In these cases you can report SPAM using Webmail. You must report SPAM within 24 hours of receiving it.

Email redirection

Correspondence sent by email from the University will be sent to your Deakin email address.

If you are already using another email address (such as that provided by your workplace or a commercial ISP) you may wish to redirect your Deakin email to that address to simplify email retrieval.

If you intend to use this facility it is important that you double-check the forwarding address (i.e. send an email to your Deakin address and check that it arrives at the specified location), as the redirection does not check for a valid address - if you make a mistake you will not receive your email.

This redirection can be activated from Email redirection.
