Current students
Access to systems and networks owned or operated by Deakin University imposes certain responsibilities and obligations. There are several policies applicable to the use of Deakin's internet services contained within The Guide.
Access to websites outside the Deakin domain (deakin.edu.au) is monitored, chargeable and, in some cases, blocked.
Deakin's IUS allows staff and students to efficiently monitor their internet usage. Usage is only recorded if you are connected to the Internet from within the Deakin domain - from a laboratory or office on campus, from the Deakin wireless network, from the student residences or by a direct dial-in connection. It does not occur if you are connected to the Internet through your Internet Service Provider. If you are connected to the Internet you can check your usage as recorded by Deakin at any time by selecting View your usage information from www.deakin.edu.au/ius.
Deakin has introduced a quota system that provides each student with an amount of internet usage which is deemed sufficient for their study purposes. As a guide, quotas for 2008 are:
If this quota is exceeded your internet access will be locked until you pay for the excess usage from your Deakin Card.
Go to www.deakin.edu.au/ius to transfer funds from your Deakin Card to pay for excess internet usage. See the Deakin Card website for information on reloading your Deakin Card.
Deakin is charged for all incoming data, with the charge depending on the origin of the data. Data originating outside Australia is charged at a higher rate than that originating within Australia. Familiarise yourself with costs of Internet use at Deakin .
