Coping with change
Your first job
The transition from the world of higher education to that of your first career job requires you to adjust to changes such as:
- increased responsibility and accountability - the workplace is much less tolerant of mistakes
- having less time and flexibility for adjustment
- having to perform, sometimes without much help.
- developing new professional and social networks
- a more demanding work schedule
- your emotional reactions to all this.
What to do
- Be proactive to find people you like to be with in your spare time. Make time for rest and recreation so you recharge your battery.
- Maintain familiar routines and relationships as much as possible
- Make sure you prepare for work by getting enough rest and arriving early to avoid stress. Look after your health.
- Throughout the workday, remain focused on learning, listening, and be sure to ask questions when you have them.
- Create a good impression by being punctual and attending and participating in all learning activities
- Develop positive workplace relationships by listening and getting to know colleagues as professionals
- Communicate your concerns, challenges and accomplishments.
- Develop a good relationship with your supervisor as s/he will set your tasks and may assume you can work independently.
- Communicate if you need help.
- Be prepared to work harder in the first year.
- Embrace ongoing learning about your actual work and general field.
Throughout your career
Some changes may be imposed upon you, either due to restructures, changes in management, new technology or marketplace factors.
- Work at staying well informed and try to anticipate changes
- Prepare for a changing work environment and its requirements by enhancing skills and knowledge and becoming multi-skilled and adaptable
- Maintain enthusiasm and develop an attitude that welcomes challenges
- Look at change as presenting opportunities
- Maintain self-awareness so you know what you offer and can articulate it to employers
You may seek some changes and initiate them. These may be promotions, opportunities to learn additional and different skills or to gain experience.
- Seek changes that satisfy your values and move you closer to goals.
- Avoid falling into a career rut. Keep developing yourself so you stay interested in work. Move out of your comfort zone to keep growing.
