Compliance obligations are derived in part from internal legislation. The University’s internal legislation comprises its own statutes and regulations, made by Council in exercise of its powers under the Deakin University Act 1974. The statutes are approved by the Minister for Education and Training and govern matters such as student discipline, academic awards and fees and charges. Regulations are made pursuant to individual statutes and tend to be more procedural in nature.
Examples of compliance obligations contained in the statutes and regulations are:
• Academic Board shall elect a Chair, Deputy Chair and a Vice Deputy Chair from within its membership (Statute 02.02(4))
• the Board of the Institute of Koorie Education shall meet not less than four times each year (regulation 02.09(14) section 7)
• the hours of opening of the Library shall be determined from time to time by the University Librarian (regulation 15.01(01) section 4).
These kinds of obligations will appear in the compliance register of the organisational area which is responsible for ensuring compliance by the University with the particular obligations.
