Credit for previous study or work (advanced standing)

Deakin acknowledges the proportion of commencing students that come from backgrounds other than secondary school, including TAFE, other universities and the workforce, and offers extensive credit transfer arrangements for most courses. This can reduce the number of units you need to take to be awarded the Deakin qualification. Applications are also welcome from students who have completed previous studies from institutions that are not listed.

All applications for advanced standing are reviewed by a committee of the faculty in which enrolment is sought. Faculties will generally consider qualifications which were completed within the last 10 years. Applicants whose qualifications are older than ten years may submit them for evaluation if they have maintained involvement in the area and can provide evidence of this.

You should check with the relevant professional body (eg CPA Australia) that accepting advanced standing towards your degree does not prevent you from being accepted into its membership.

Applying for advanced standing

When you apply for a course at Deakin, indicate in the appropriate section on your application (opens in new window) that you wish to be considered for advanced standing. If you wish to apply for advanced standing at any other time, you can complete the advanced standing application form (pdf 51kb) and forward directly to your Enrolment Officer.

Applicants should forward a full academic record which has been certified/notarised by the institution which awarded the qualification or certified photocopies of original transcripts. A complete assessment can be made only when full documentation has been provided. Applicants should not send original documents as they will not be returned.
