The Deakin Medical School is Victoria’s first rural and regional medical school. Our goal is to train students to become highly skilled doctors who are motivated to pursue a career as specialists or general practitioners in rural or regional areas. We have developed an innovative four year curriculum with an emphasis on clinical and procedural skills, chronic disease prevention and management, and inter-professional teamwork.
Our students will be based at the Geelong Campus at Waurn Ponds in a new purpose-built medical school for the first two years of the course. The main teaching method will be problem-based learning, where students will analyse real cases in small groups to learn the basic sciences required to practice medicine.
There will be a strong emphasis on information technology, which has become an essential part of clinical practice, and on early clinical experience, including simulation-based teaching.
Students will choose one of four regional clinical schools for the third and fourth years of the course – in Geelong, Ballarat, Warrnambool or Box Hill. There will also be a small group of students who spend all of the third year attached to regional general practices. There will be opportunities to study interstate or overseas during elective terms in the fourth year.
Students will be taught and supervised by dedicated, experienced academic staff and clinicians, and will be welcomed and strongly supported by local communities. There is a significant medical workforce shortage throughout Australia, particularly in rural, regional and outer metropolitan locations. We are confident that Deakin graduates will be in high demand for internships in Victoria and other states. They will be well prepared to enter specialty training programs in all areas of medicine and to work in a wide range of hospital or ambulatory settings in Australia or overseas, including careers in medical research.
Deakin’s course in medicine is the Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery (BMBS). It is a graduate entry program, meaning applicants must have a completed an undergraduate degree to be considered for a place in the program.
