The School of Nursing at Deakin University is one of the largest in Australia and offers programs for each stage of a nurse’s career, from undergraduate to postgraduate courses – including higher degrees by research – as well as professional development short courses. The School employs key clinicians and researchers to ensure courses are structured and facilitated to reflect current trends and evidence-based practice in nursing.
The Bachelor of Nursing and combined courses (an approved combination of courses undertaken simultaneously, which leads to the conferral of two awards) are designed to meet the registration requirements for Division 1 of the Nurses Board of Victoria.
The School has many formal and informal links with hospitals and other agencies in both research and consultancy activities. Partnership arrangements with major health care providers have strengthened the School’s research focus in the areas of chronic illness, acute and critical care and health services evaluation.

Clinical placements
A significant proportion of our courses is devoted to clinical practice experience conducted in metropolitan, regional and rural settings, beginning in trimester 1 of your first year. This early exposure to the clinical environment gives you the opportunity to develop clinical skills in acute/sub-acute care, medical and surgical care, aged care, community health, midwifery, paediatrics and psychiatric/mental health.
Industry partnerships
The School of Nursing’s Clinical Partnership Program is the first coordinated program of its kind in Australia where the University connects with nine health care organisations in the public and private sector in metropolitan and non-metropolitan regions. The program aims to promote clinical multi-disciplinary research, enabling research to be strategically focused in areas of clinical importance to the health care field. These alliances allow major multi-site clinical trials to be undertaken and provide a base for national and international involvement. Each partner health care organisation has a joint appointment with the School of Nursing in the form of either a professor of clinical nursing or a senior research fellow. This ensures our courses remain relevant to the specific health care needs of the community.
Professional recognition
Graduates of the Bachelor of Nursing will fulfil the registration requirements for Division 1 of the Nurses Board of Victoria. On successful completion of the Bachelor of Midwifery, students will be eligible for qualification of midwife in the Division 1 register.
