Our science courses provide practical and theoretical teaching in subjects ranging from broad to more specialist programs.
The Bachelor of Science provides a firm and thorough knowledge of contemporary science for careers in industry, government and education, or further study options. Studies in biological science incorporate the structure, function, behaviour and evolution of living organisms. Biomedical science also offers graduates another option as a new pathway to studies in Deakin’s Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery.
Students in all science courses have access to first class infrastructure and facilities, including recently refurbished laboratories, high-quality forensic instrumentation and the latest scientific equipment.
Graduates of our science courses have the opportunity to work in a wide range of cutting-edge, rapidly growing fields. We bring research expertise into teaching as our world-class researchers contribute to teaching in both environmental and science courses. Additionally, industry leaders deliver guest lectures in specific areas and contribute to the development of curriculum.
Within the science area of study we offer an excellent generalist degree – the Bachelor of Science – which gives you a firm and thorough knowledge of contemporary science. As part of this course you can specialise in areas of biology, biological chemistry, biotechnology, chemistry, earth science, environmental science, forensic biology, information technology, mathematical modelling, multimedia technology, nanotechnology, psychology or zoology.
At the undergraduate level we also offer the Bachelor of Biological Science, Bachelor of Biomedical Science, Bachelor of Food Science and Nutrition, Bachelor of Forensic Science and a number of combined courses, including the Bachelor of Teaching (Science)/Bachelor of Science. Opportunities exist for suitably qualified applicants to undertake an honours degree.
The School of Life and Environmental Sciences offers courses in occupational hygiene, water resource management, biotechnology and research commercialisation at postgraduate level.

Industry learning
At Deakin we aim to produce high calibre graduates who are employable and have a broad understanding of the career
opportunities available in their chosen field.
Industry Based Learning (IBL) involves working full or part time in industry as part of your degree program and plays a valuable role in preparing for graduate employment. The placement is incorporated into a unit of study and credited towards your degree. As a student in the IBL program, you will be given an opportunity to apply and consolidate knowledge gained at university, experience workplace culture and work practices, explore career options and develop a professional network. Graduate recruiters usually give preference to students who have participated in IBL programs, as these students are better prepared for work, and are likely to be more informed about their career options.
Professional recognition
Graduates of the Bachelor of Teaching (Science)/Bachelor of Science will qualify for a degree in secondary science teaching which will meet the registration requirements for the Victorian Institute of Teaching, and other state teacher registration boards in Australia.
