VCE Parents' Guide

One of the biggest choices and investments a student will make is whether to go to university. To help parents understand the decisions facing their son or daughter, we've gathered together some practical information.

For further information, download the VCE Parents' Guide to University (991KB).

Why choose Deakin?

Deakin is a large and diverse institution with four small campuses offering a personal and friendly study environment for students to succeed.
Deakin's campuses are located in Melbourne at Burwood, Warrnambool on Victoria's south-west coast, and two campuses in Geelong.

Deakin has twice been awarded the Good Universities Guide 'University of the Year'. It is recognised as a national leader in flexible learning, allowing students the option of studying full time, part time, or via distance education.

Online learning

Deakin has an enviable reputation for delivering courses through new and innovative techniques, like iLecture – a streaming technology that provides students with online access to recorded lectures. In addition to video and audio streaming, some lectures are also available as podcasts and downloadable MP3s, giving students even greater access to course materials and resources in a format they're comfortable with.
To ensure that students graduate with the necessary skills to meet the demands of the modern workforce, all undergraduate students are required to complete at least one unit of study online.

First year support

Deakin's support for students is outstanding. As well as providing support services, Student Life works to develop a sense of community. Services include sport and recreation, counselling and academic skills workshops.
Once students have enrolled in their first year at Deakin, they'll receive plenty of assistance with settling into university life. Deakin provides a First Year at Deakin program which helps students find their way around the campus and build friendships and networks in the first few weeks of semester.

Guarantee a place at Deakin

Students can guarantee a place at Deakin University provided they:

If the ENTER is above the Clearly-In rank, a CSP will be offered. If their ENTER is below the Clearly-In but above the Guaranteed ENTER, a FPP will be offered. Deakin has a policy in place to enable students to transfer from a FPP to a CSP after meeting certain criteria.

Fees and tuition

Under Federal Government legislation, university students are required to contribute to the cost of their tertiary education by paying for part of their course. There are a number of ways these contributions can be made.

Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP)

For this type of place, the Australian Government pays a proportion of the tuition costs of the course and the student funds the balance. There are several fee levels or 'bands' and different courses attract different liabilities. Fee payments may be deferred using the HECS-HELP scheme while fees paid up front receive a discount.

Fee-Paying Place (FPP)

Unlike CSPs, FPP are not partially subsidised by the government. Students can choose to pay fees up front or defer some or all of the payment with FEE-HELP, the Australian government's loan program. Applying for a FPP means the likelihood of being accepted into a preferred course and campus is increased.

For information about CSPs and HELP programs, visit the government's Going to Uni website (new window).

Guaranteed transfer

If students meet certain criteria, they can be guaranteed a transfer from a FPP to a CSP. Once this has occurred, the student will retain the CSP for the remainder of the course.

VTAC

The Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) acts on behalf of universities and institutes of TAFE by receiving and forwarding applications (including any accompanying information or documents) and making offers. VTAC does not select VCE students, and does not determine selection criteria used by Deakin or other institutions. Visit the VTAC website (new window).
