Professor Sally Walker Vice-Chancellor, Deakin University

Welcome from the Vice-Chancellor

Deakin University has a proud history in broadening access to education. One of its founding features was a commitment to off-campus teaching that ensured higher education was not only accessible, but responsive to the needs of a student’s work, family and lifestyle commitments.

Today, access and equity continues to be one of Deakin’s core commitments. It is embedded within the University’s planning framework to ensure that individuals and groups, who might not otherwise enjoy the benefits of higher education, have the opportunity to do so.

Education is key to social, cultural and economic prosperity. Yet access to higher education can be costly. That is why at Deakin we use our best endeavours to make higher education accessible for those most in need of assistance.

The University’s Access and Equity Scholarships are developed specifically for people who might not otherwise have the opportunity to access higher education – students from disadvantaged financial backgrounds; students from rural and regional backgrounds; students with a disability; mature-age students; and Indigenous students.

In addition to its Scholarships Program, Deakin has a range of initiatives that reinforce its commitment to student access and equity. These include a dedicated Student Equity Unit; distance education; flexible study options and sophisticated online technology; as well as a range of student support services including a Disability Resource Centre, health and medical services, counselling and personal development, and academic skills resources.

The University also recognises and rewards students who demonstrate outstanding
academic abilities through its Merit Scholarships Program. I encourage you to take the time to read about the broad range of scholarships available through the Deakin Scholarships Program.

I look forward to welcoming you to Deakin University.
