Scholarship award ceremonies

Deakin University demonstrates its commitment to access and equity in education with the presentation of scholarships to students at DeakinWeek scholarship award ceremonies, held every three years.

The inaugural DeakinWeek ceremonies took place in May 2006 and provided donors and students the opportunity to get together.

ANZ Equity Scholarship recipient Vikki Powers was one of 24 scholarship awardees from a range of backgrounds and equity groups in attendance at the ceremonies. Thanks to the scholarship, Ms Powers will now be able to pursue her studies in the Bachelor of Nursing.

'When I embarked on the Bachelor of Nursing course, I was prepared for things to become very tight financially for me and my four children,' she said.

'Things are still challenging, but the Deakin ANZ Scholarship has enabled me to hang in there and not have to defer for financial reasons, which has been an incredible help to me and my children.'

Deakin's scholarship program is made possible by the generosity of its donors, many of whom were represented on the night.

Ms Yen Thomson, ANZ Banking Group's director of government for Victoria and Tasmania, said that the ANZ was committed to earning the trust of the community and actively demonstrating its social responsibilities.

'Partnering with Deakin University in its scholarship program to improve access to higher education – particularly for students who face financial and social barriers – is one way of demonstrating our social and community obligation,' Ms Thomson said.

The ceremonies were officiated by Dr Irene Irvine, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Development) who commented that, 'The education of Australia's tertiary students, over the last decade or so, has moved away from the exclusive domain of government.

'Increasingly education is being delivered on the strength of pertinent and fitting partnerships between governments, industry, community and educators.'

Dr Irvine paid tribute to the University's donors saying, 'I would particularly like to acknowledge the support and generosity of the donors who have made Deakin's scholarship program possible.'

Deakin's scholarship donors include the ANZ Bank, The Pratt Foundation, City of Whitehorse, Warrnambool City Council, the Percy Baxter Charitable Trust and many more whose contributions are gratefully appreciated.
