We are delighted to announce the formation of the Deakin Foundation – a major step toward increasing philanthropic giving to the University. This is consistent with Deakin University’s Strategic Plan which focuses on the development and nurturing of effective partnerships.
The purpose of this brochure is to introduce you to the Foundation and its Directors. The Foundation has been fortunate to attract a group of distinguished Victorians to its Board.
The Directors have between them a wide range of skills and experience drawn from business, the professions and the philanthropic sector. We believe that they will make a major contribution to the work of the Foundation through their broad perspectives and their extensive contact network.
Philanthropy has traditionally played an important role in university development. Donations have helped to construct buildings, provide equipment, support research, assist students, beautify campuses through the donation of artworks and build endowments. Several recent reports have pointed to the scope for philanthropy to play a more prominent role in supporting higher education in Australia and attitudes in Australia to philanthropy have undergone something of a revolution in the past few years. Philanthropy is now widely regarded as an investment in a relationship and philanthropists are actively seeking to develop long-term partnerships with the organisations and causes they support.
'Investment' is an important element in the establishment of the Deakin Foundation. Philanthropic giving is regarded as an investment in a relationship and giving to Deakin is clearly an investment in education. The Foundation's fundraising priorities aim to improve our education system and will provide all Australians with economic, social and cultural benefits.
The Foundation’s key objective is to provide a focus for philanthropic giving to Deakin.
