This information is used to determine overweight and obesity prevalence using internationally recognised definitions. These are our primary outcome measures.
Designed to capture all foods and beverages brought to pre-school or school in lunchboxes as well as foods purchased at school canteens & from vending machines. Food groups include sandwiches with various fillings, fast foods, packaged snacks (eg potato crisps), fruit, biscuits, cakes and buns, fruit drinks, soft drinks and milk.

A telephone interview with parents or guardians gives us information on:
- children’s food and beverage intake;
- children’s activity levels and transportation modes;
- parents socio-demographics;
- parents attitudes towards their child(ren)’s weight;
- household rules and practices in relation to nutrition and physical activity;
- the suitability and safety of the neighbourhood for access to fruit and vegetables,
for physical activity and for active transport

Grade 5 and 6 children complete some questions themselves on:
- food and beverages consumed;
- television viewing, computer games and physical activity;
- transportation methods;
- perceptions of weight and self esteem

Information from the local government authority on the community environment including availability and safety of parks, walking & cycling access, the presence/absence of fast food outlets and fresh fruit and vegetable stores (in development).
