Obesity Prevention 5-day Course

The Obesity Prevention Course has been developed by Deakin University to provide a fundamental understanding of the obesity epidemic and the determinants of obesity as well as approaches for addressing the obesity epidemic.

The course is now offered as a 5 day intensive mode program made up of lectures, activities and a workshop based on adult learning principles. It is delivered by local obesity prevention experts (Professor Boyd Swinburn, Professor Liz Waters, Dr Lisa Gibbs, Dr Andrea Sanigorski and others) and staff involved in local community-based obesity preventions programs from Be Active Eat Well, Romp & Chomp, It's Your Move! and Fun 'n' Healthy in Moreland.

The course is designed for managers and practitioners working in physical activity and/or nutrition promotion including staff from: health promotion, community health, public health practitioners, GP's, dietitians, nurses, physical activity practitioners, local government staff and others working in the physical activity and nutrition fields.

The focus of the course is obesity prevention for population health. The course will provide a fundamental understanding of the obesity epidemic and its impact, a framework for understanding determinants and taking action/approaches for addressing the obesity epidemic, and show the evidence base for obesity prevention. Local significant community-based projects will be showcased by staff working on these projects with the opportunity to discover the realities of planning, implementing and evaluating such projects including building capacity and social marketing. Tools for engaging key-stakeholders and building a community-based obesity prevention action plan will be demonstrated using the ANGELO (Analysis Grid of Elements Linked to Obesity) framework.
