PPR
Facilitated programs offer the opportunity for staff to learn from and share experiences with colleagues from diverse backgrounds, education, job experience and level. Courses are often designed to incorporate experiential learning activities such as role plays which allow the participant to practice these skills in a safe and encouraging environment.
The following programs are examples of courses facilitated by internal and external specialists who have extensive skills and knowledge. Full details of the content, course information and registration can be accessed through training course search and registration.
The following is a sample of technology courses offered in the staff development program.
Quick
start to IT at Deakin
This course will make sense of the Deakin IT set up and its unique applications
such as the Deakin Calendar and Web mail. Other topics covered include
portal, navigation of Deakin web site and IP telephone system.
Adobe
Acrobat
An introduction to working with PDFs. Including the navigation and viewing
of existing PDFs and the creation of PDFs from within application such as Microsoft
Word.
Design
for non designers: Design theory and practice
This course will enable participants to gain a better understanding of graphic
design and typography and to be able to bring documentation such as newsletters
and promotional material up to a more professional level - taking into account
issues such as font selection, style guides, colour, balance and message.
EndNote
EndNote is a bibliographical database for managing references to be used in
writing papers, theses etc. Set up an EndNote library, manage references (sorting
and locating references), use styles to format manuscripts.
Eudora
This training covers sending and receiving mail, using various message options
and editing the personal address book. Participants also look at the more
advanced features such as signatures, stationery and auto-replies.
MS
Access essentials
MS Access allows users to quickly create (or input) a table of data and sort
that data, find information from it and print the results in an easy to read
report.

Excel essentials
A course designed for beginners to the MS Excel spreadsheet package
and for existing 'self taught' users.
MS
Excel intermediate
The intermediate level covers more of the calculating capabilities of
MS Excel. It shows how to work with arithmetic, statistical and financial
functions as well as introducing conditional calculations for ease in analysing
figures.

Powerpoint essentials
This course is designed to provide participants with the know how to quickly
produce good looking presentations using MS Powerpoint.

Word intermediate
This course covers text, paragraph and document formatting processes and shortcuts.
Mail merging is explained in some depth as well as more options on working
with tables.
NVivo
A hands-on introductory workshop in NVivo, during which you meet and try
out each of the tools the software offers for managing documents and ideas,
storing information, coding, modeling and reporting your discoveries.
Writing
for the web
Develop an understanding of the Deakin web environment. Good planning
and writing skills and the implementation of quality assurance measures are
the key issues that will be addressed during Writing for the Web.
Negotiation, influence and persuasion
This course explores the negotiation process and will enable participants to
practice negotiating in a variety of simulations.
Presentation
skills
Design and deliver effective presentations. The emphasis of the course is
on building confidence and competence to structure and deliver presentations
that inform, persuade or inspire.
Writing
your PPR objectives
Designed to assist managers, supervisors and general staff develop effective
performance goals, objectives and performance standards as part of the PPR process.
Project
management
This one day program provides the skills to scope and plan a project to
be successfully completed on time and within budget.
Report
writing essentials
Focuses on how to write high quality reports in the minimum time. These
are reports that clearly convey the correct message, meet the readers’
expectations and encourage the desired response from the readers.
Accelerated
problem solving
How to use a simple and proven problem solving approach that can be used
immediately for many different types of situations. A practical way to ensure
that you achieve your key work goals without sacrificing the other vital areas
of your life.
Minute
Taking
The aims of this course are to show participants how to write complete,
accurate and well presented minutes with confidence and in minimum time.
Working with Asian names
Designed for all university administrative and academic staff who regularly deal with students and staff of Asian background. It explores how cultural differences are linked to the way people use names, and covers the structure, use and pronunciation of names from 10 Asian regions.
