Institute of Teaching and Learning
Welcome to the Institute of Teaching and Learning (ITL). Our role is to offer support and opportunities for staff at Deakin to enhance their capacity to be effective educators. We work with faculties and schools and divisions to promote Deakin's principles of teaching and learning in the following ways:
Induction and development
ITL helps new and existing staff to learn about enhancing their teaching at Deakin through:
- the ITL Support Service as a primary contact point via email or telephone
- induction days for new academics
- professional development opportunities for academic and casual teaching staff
- teaching and learning events such as workshops, seminars, forums and hands-on training
- providing educational design advice for units, courses and learning materials
- a suite of online professional development materials targeting many aspects of teaching
- working with individual academics on teaching and learning issues
- strategies for responding to SETU and CEQ
- contributing to Deakin's Graduate Certificate of Higher Education
- the annual Teaching and Learning Conference
Innovation and leadership
ITL promotes and supports innovation and leadership in teaching by:
- exploring and supporting alternative pedagogy
- identifying and actioning research opportunities
- acting as a central contact point for all staff interested in teaching and learning
- supporting and contributing to communities of practice that explore and supporting innovation in the application of e-learning technologies
- acting as a conduit to the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (previously known as the Carrick Institute)

ITL promotes opportunities to recognise and reward the outstanding educational practices at Deakin through the:
- College of Distinguished Deakin Educators (CDDE)
- Strategic Teaching And Learning Grants Scheme (STALGS)

- National Teaching Awards and Grants
- Teaching Scholars Program
