The key to successful teaching and learning is our teachers. In line with Deakin's Teaching and Learning Plan, the University is committed to fostering an environment in which teaching excellence is recognised and celebrated.
Internal awards for teaching excellence are offered at both Faculty and University level. Awards at Faculty level vary by Faculty. At University level they are grouped under the Vice-Chancellor's Awards for Excellent Contributions to Deakin. There are awards for teaching excellence that are centred on the individual teachers, and there are awards for outstanding achievement that are centred on projects. Several highly acclaimed external teaching awards are offered at Industry level and through organisations such as the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC), formerly Carrick Institute.
The selection criteria for Vice-Chancellor's awards for teaching excellence have been developed specifically to align with the criteria for ALTC national teaching awards. Staff identified by the Teaching Awards Selection Panel (responsible for developing recommendations to the Vice-Chancellor on recipients of the Vice-Chancellor's teaching awards) as having submitted a strong application for a Vice-Chancellor's teaching award may be approached by ITL to apply for an ALTC Citation and/or teaching excellence award. ALTC Citations and teaching excellence awards are highly prestigious and attract sums of $10,000 and $25,000, respectively, in prize money (paid to recipient's university for allocation). In addition, recipients will be invited to attend awards ceremonies in State capitals for Citations, and in Canberra, held in November each year at Parliament House for the teaching excellence awards.
Receipt of any of the above teaching awards would indicate a strong contribution to teaching and learning in relation to a promotion application.
