As an Academic Education Designer, I aim to maintain a balanced profile of teaching, research, service and administration. Enacting my teaching role involves the design and development of technology-mediated teaching and learning environments for the faculties, but also major professional development (PD) initiatives for both new and experienced academic teaching staff. PD is practiced through individual and group presentations, online (the first extended website for this purpose was in 1996) and other forms of educational media, but also through project-based initiatives such as STALGS projects and Fellowships.
Key areas of activity:
I was attracted to postgraduate studies in Educational Technology in 1979 and in 1980 I commenced lecturing in undergraduate and postgraduate courses offering both theoretical and practical units in Educational Technology and Instructional Design to educators across all sectors. Since my appointment in 1993 to the 'Educational Development and Research Services', Course Development Centre, I have been a designer of technology-enhanced learning resources and more recently comprehensively conceived and integrated learning environments involving e-learning as an element of varying significance.
I have recently been recognised for design excellence while in the Education Design Group, through two Deakin Vice-Chancellor's awards (2000 and 2002) for 'Excellence in Teaching'. These involved leadership in teams that created the simulation 'HOTcopy: a virtual newsroom', and earlier, the program-wide e-learning environment 'Educational Studies Online'; a LMS with associated Digital Object Management System, discussion lists and Professional Portfolio. My research and development work continues through creating a wholly online 'model' unit involving 'MediaWise' database, and 'Experiential Learning through Simulations' (LiveSim) under the DVC (Acad)'s Strategic Teaching and Learning Grants Scheme.
Particular recent highlights include the development and publication (Allen and Unwin) of [HOTcopy®] which won the following awards:
A particularly pleasing highlight was receipt of the 2004 ASCILITE award for the 'Outstanding Paper' which I presented on behalf of Dale and James:
