The Deakin wireless network is a service provided for staff and students
by the Information Technology Services Division (ITSD). The service
offers the flexibility to access the Deakin network and the Internet
without requiring cables or wires.
In a wireless network, data travels from a card in your computer to a
wireless base station, through a low-power radio frequency signal.
A ‘wireless zone’ is a campus location where
the wireless network can be accessed. An antenna or base station is located
nearby providing a radio signal.
You can find a zone by looking for a Deakin wireless
zone sign
which
is located near a base station.
There are two wireless networks available to Deakin University staff and students.
DeakinSecureDeakinSecure is an upgrade to Deakin University's old unsecured wireless network DeakiNet. It uses encryption to safeguard data transferred across the wireless network, and authentication to ensure only people with a valid Deakin username and password can access the wirless network. Once your machine is configured to use it you effectively have network connectivity wherever you see a wireless zone.
DeakinSecure does not require a VPN connection. Authentication occurs immediately once a connection is made to the wireless network allowing you to use Deakin's network resources (e.g. connecting to server storage areas such as your home directory or shared work areas, or access the Internet) without additional steps.
EduroamEduroam is a wireless service that allows Deakin staff and students to use wireless networks at cooperating universities in Australia and around the world using their Deakin username and password to gain access to resources such as email, the Internet and network shares at Deakin.
Eduroam also allows visiting staff and students to use the Deakin wireless network to gain access to resources at their home institutions.
Detailed information about eduroam, including details about participating organisations, can be found at www.aarnet.edu.au
How to connect to the Deakin wireless networkA wireless network offers the freedom and convenience of being able to connect to the network with your computer wherever there is a wireless zone. However it is important to remember that wireless access is intended to supplement the wired network, not replace it.
Any use of the wireless network implies that the Information Technology Use - Operational Policy will be adhered to.
