The Special Collection is a research collection containing over 60,000 titles. The main collection is housed at the Waterfront Campus Library in Geelong and there are smaller collections at the Warrnambool Campus Library and the Burwood Campus Library in Melbourne.

The collection is made up of specialised research collections, in addition to many items which need special care because of their age, beauty, rarity, fragility or for other qualities that make them valuable as objects as well as for research.

These collections have been mainly acquired through the generosity of a number of benefactors.
