Internationalisation conference: Delivering Effective Partnerships – Adjusting the Settings

Deakin International

An internationalisation conference organised by Deakin International was held on 11 June at the Melbourne Campus at Burwood. The conference was attended by 110 staff from across the University, and provided the opportunity for the University community to share their experiences regarding best practice and lessons learned from the management of international partnerships.

The conference, called Delivering Effective International Partnerships – Adjusting the Settings, featured two external keynote speakers who gave highly valuable and informative presentations. Professor in the Department of Educational Policy Studies at the University of Illinois, and Honorary Professor, School of Education, Faculty of Arts and Education at Deakin, Professor Fazal Rivzi, presented on the modalities of transnational research collaboration in higher education. The second keynote speaker was Head of Research Services at IDP Education, Melissa Banks, who summarised the key findings from important research undertaken on the global demand for international higher education places.

Presentations were also given by Deakin staff and students. Professor Leigh Ackland, Professor Sing Kai Lo and Professor Terry Evans presented on the theme of research partnerships. Dr Josephine Palermo, Professor David Mellor and Professor John Wood (Navitas) gave presentations on organisational partnerships. Student support and mobility partnerships were explored by staff members Jan Fermelis and Rachel Baron, and by students Robin Chacko and Chris Atkinson. The teaching partnerships stream included presentations by Professor Barry Cooper, Professor Kanagaratnam Baskaran and Professor Ian Robottom.

Feedback from participants was very positive.

Copies of the presentations given at the conference are available on the website at www.deakin.edu.au/international/staff/conference/presentations.php.
