Emergency financial relief for studentsDivision of Student LifeStudents often experience short term crises as a result of unexpected financial issues. Wallets are lost or stolen, Centrelink payments are delayed, and money from family overseas is sometimes delayed. This can be very upsetting and disruptive, and directly affect a student’s ability to attend university and focus on study. To assist students manage this short-term crisis the Division of Student Life (DSL) now offers food vouchers, and for students at the Melbourne Campus at Burwood, Met cards, to affected students. There is no expectation that the student repays this voucher. The food voucher will be in the form of a $30 Safeway gift card. It can be spent at the student’s discretion (excluding alcohol or cigarettes). Anyone can refer a student to obtain a food and/or transport voucher to DSL. We encourage you to be alert to students’ needs. For Faculty staff, if you know of a student you think would benefit from this assistance please let them know. They can then attend Student Life reception and speak with a loans officer or counsellor. The University Student Loans and Grants Scheme is another initiative aimed at assisting students. Students may be eligible for interest-free loans to assist with living expenses or tuition fees. In some circumstances students in dire need may also be eligible for a grant. Students should be referred to DSL (see below) or to the information on student loans and grants on the current students website. If you have any questions or would like more information please call DSL on the numbers below.
