Deakin students in first ever university squash teamTwo Deakin University students have been selected to compete in the World University Squash Championships. The pair will be part of the first-ever Australian squash team to compete at the championships. Rex Hedrick and Melody Francis will travel to Cairo, Egypt where the biannual championships will be held in from 22–28 August. Rex, 19 is a scholarship holder with the Victorian Institute of Sport and is in his second year studying sport and exercise. Rex said he is very excited about going to Egypt and thinks it will be a great experience. ‘I know some of the players from Canada who are going, and they are pretty good, so I know it’s not going to be easy,’ Rex said. Melody, who is also 19, won the Czech Junior Open in 2007 and represented Australia at the Women’s World Junior Championships in Hong Kong last year. She played her first tournament on the main women’s professional tour earlier this year, reaching the semi-finals of the Top End Open in Darwin.
