Laboratory and Biosafety Committee (LBC)

Terms of Reference

The Laboratory and Biosafety Committee (LBC) is a Committee of the Vice Chancellor. It provides expert advice to the Vice Chancellor on laboratory and biosafety issues related to research and other academic activities. It will consider projects requiring biosafety clearance in accordance with guidelines set by the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) - external link, and inspect Physical Containment (PC1 and PC2) facilities.

The Committee

The Committee meets between 4 and 6 times a year to discuss business, applications and policies. The first meeting of every year is designated as a policy meeting. The LBC also considers applications between meetings on a circulation basis.

The Biosafety Director, Aprof Tess Toop meets with researchers to discuss applications prior to their submission to the Committee. If you require help with writing an application please contact Aprof Tess Toop.

The Committee has a Facility Inspection Group. This group inspects PC1 and PC2 facilities. PC2 facilities in which GMO work is performed must also be certified by the OGTR. The inspection group also annually inspects all PC2 facilities at Deakin University and can help advise on the creation of new facilities. For more information please contact Dr Barry Stewart, Technical Manager.
