Title: Muscle Vascular Research and Gene Therapy Using Ultrasound

Summary: We seek funds to set up a national facility for ultrasound in muscle vascular research and gene therapy. Ultrasound with microbubbles will be used for the imaging of muscle microvascular blood flow and as a delivery modality for gene constructs to endothelial cells that control blood flow. The technology has application to (i) the assessment and therapeutic treatment of impaired microvascular function as in diabetics; (ii) the assessment of adaptation to physical training and (iii) the development of therapeutic agents used to treat diabetes. We anticipate improved technology that is fully characterized and novel therapeutics that improve microvascular blood flow .

Summary: We aim to establish a facility that allows non-invasive measurement of apparent material and structural properties of small animal and human bone using leading-edge technology, peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT). pQCT measurements, incorporated into our fundamental bone research will improve our understanding of the role of mechanical, environmental and local factors in regulating bone and mineral metabolism and altering bone properties. This has implications for maximising bone strength and promoting optimal health throughout life. The facility will be used for a diverse range of multidisciplinary basic bone research and is vital in order to maintain international competitiveness in the field.

Summary: HIV/AIDS is one of the greatest contemporary threats to global human security, and its rapid growth in parts of the Asia/Pacific region makes it a major concern for Australia. Appropriate responses to the threat require accurate and regularly updated policy information. The construction of an interactive HIV policy data bank will support considerable research in a number of disciplines directly relevant to HIV control. This project draws on multiple sources to construct a research and policy tool which will be drawn on by the partner organizations in a variety of HIV-related research projects.

Summary: We request a transmission and a scanning electron microscope, each with specialist electron probes smaller than a nanometre, which can selectively analyse the atomic structure and chemistry of sub-nanometre regions of material.These capabilities are essential to advance a large range of research projects at the cutting-edge of materials science and engineering, undertaken by Victoria's leading research institutions: five Victorian universities, the CSIRO, Nanotechnology Victoria Ltd, the Victorian Centre for Advanced Materials Manufacturing and the CRC for Microtechnology. Together they have contributed $2.58 million to this project. This state-of-the-art facility will include the highest spatial resolution microscope in Australia.
