The Geelong Technology Precinct (GTP), based at Deakin University’s 376 hectare Waurn Ponds campus, is a meeting place between research and industry.
'This is where you have the partnerships coming together, where technology meets knowledge,' says the GTP Manager John Paxton.
'We have the experts in their fields, the globally significant researchers capable of attracting funding and industry partnerships. Because these people are the best in the world, they can work anywhere in the world so we have to make sure we provide them with a good working environment and the infrastructure to do what they do best. The GTP does that.'
The GTP is already home to four core research areas - biotechnology, nanotechnology, prototyping and wine science.
Deakin’s Centre for Cool Climate Wine Science, only a couple of years old, has already won international recognition. South Korea is using the centre’s expertise to set up its own cool climate wine industry.
With convention facilities and student accommodation in addition to a wide range of well-equipped laboratories and work areas, the GTP allows Deakin to bring together significant numbers of researchers who work alongside each other, another important part of the whole of university approach to discovery.
There is still room for expansion, too.
'The vision is for us to extend,' John Paxton says. 'Unlike many other similar technology parks where space is limited we have 54 hectares behind the existing facilities we can use. We have highway access to Melbourne at our front door and also to the Warrnambool campus. We’re also very close to the beaches on the Victorian Surf Coast including the world famous Bells Beach, another reason the world’s best researchers might choose Geelong.”
As Deakin’s reputation in research grows, so to does its ability to provide the best facilities, infrastructure and lifestyle for those who grow with it.
