Facilities Management (FM) is a next-generation degree for the Australian property industry, so not surprisingly Deakin University is leading the way by introducing courses that are job-ready, practical and responsive to industry need. Graduates from a number of disciplines (including business management) can enter directly into third year and exit with the Bachelor of Facilities Management in just nine months on campus. FM can also be studied later as a second qualification following completion of a construction or business management degree.
Facilities are second only to human resources as the largest 'asset' for an organisation, and the role of the facilities manager is to ensure that the physical infrastructure is strategically aligned to the organisation's core business-- incorporating financial, social and environmental objectives over the entire life cycle of property investment and ownership. The role is becoming critical as built infrastructure increases in complexity and value and has more pervasive social impact, such as use of natural resources.
The course is not normally available for direct entry, but is rather an early exit option from the combined degree. BFM graduates are eligible to return and complete the Bachelor of Facilities Management (Honours) program, which is one year duration, provided credit level results or higher were achieved in the first degree.
This course satisfies the educational requirements of the Facility Management Association of Australia (FMA). The optional honoursyear satisfies the educational requirements of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) for the FM discipline.
FM is also a global profession and graduates are able to work internationally in a diverse range of fields including development management, construction project management, corporate real estate, strategic planning, space management, and workplace logistics. Well-paid jobs await those with organisational abilities and a passion for the built environment.
Prerequisites are Units 3 and 4 - English (any).
Middle band students with a study score of at least 20 in up to three of chemistry, physics, specialist mathematics, mathematical methods or visual communication and design will have their ENTER increased up to one point higher per study, to a maximum three points.
