Dean's welcome

Professor Brian McGawAll science faculties believe in the value of research and teaching, yet there are differences in emphasis and approach to core activities. So what makes us different?

We provide a stimulating and friendly environment for study, in which students have ample opportunities to interact with staff and engage in vigorous discussion of ideas and concepts relevant to their courses.

The Faculty of Science and Technology at Deakin University has distinctive objectives, expressed through four core values aligned to teaching and learning, research and research training, community engagement and staff empowerment.

We aim to:

  • provide highly relevant courses in science and technology, producing well-informed, employable and adaptable graduates with a broad skill base, an understanding of their chosen field and its social and commercial contexts, and a capacity for life-long learning
  • provide innovative research that creates new knowledge in science and technology with far-reaching applications for the benefit of industry and the community
  • promote and enrich the study of science and technology in schools and enhance awareness, understanding and appreciation of science and technology in schools and the wider community
  • provide opportunities for staff to achieve their full potential by providing a dynamic and supportive working environment in which the faculty and its staff may continually develop intellectually and professionally.

In 2001, Deakin University was listed as having the highest rate of growth in research income of all the Australian universities. Whilst there is some exciting long term scientific research underpinning this achievement, the faculty's expertise in forming partnerships has played a key role in enabling the faculty to be a major research driver in the University.

In this context, the faculty is a great place to start an academic career. Early career academics are mentored in teaching, research, entrepreneurial activity and interactions with Government. The faculty's programs are delivered through three Schools - Architecture and Building, Life and Environmental Sciences, and Engineering and Information Technology.

Courses are offered at the following campuses: Melbourne Campus at Burwood, Geelong Campus at Waurn Ponds, Geelong Waterfront Campus and Warrnambool Campus. This blend of regional and city campuses enables Deakin to offer a unique range of opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate study and for staff sabbaticals.
