You can find out all about engineering and IT degrees at Deakin by coming along to our Open Days in Geelong and Melbourne, held around August each year. Campus maps are provided on the day.
The dates can be found at http://www.deakin.edu.au/open/
Most people don't realise that an engineer can work just about anywhere, on just about anything. You might work in a design team. Managing a manufacturing plant. Helping government departments make decisions. Taking charge of overseas aid projects. Even in space. With engineering, the sky's the limit. IT careers are also extremely varied with options for working in a variety of industries (telecommunications, film and television, health, business services, etc.) in a variety of roles (programmer, IT security specialist, multimedia or web designer, IT manager, computer game designer, consultant, etc.). And it doesn't have to mean sitting in front of a computer all day! One thing is for certain, IT is everywhere, and the world needs more IT specialists as we face a growing skills shortage. There is also a critical shortage of engineering graduates at the moment, and skills shortages mean graduates are in high demand and can command great salaries.
At Open Day you can come along and learn more about the career options in engineering and IT, and about our courses that can help you get there.
Find out how haptics is engineering the future by putting on your 3-D glasses, walking into a fascinating research laboratory that looks like a cinema, and immersing yourself in an incredible virtual world you can feel as well as see. Tours of Deakin's haptics lab (Waurn Ponds campus), unique in Australia, will run every hour (on the half-hour). The Deakin Race Technologies team will be showing off the racing car they design, build and compete every year in an international challenge. There will be lots of robots to interact with, and the opportunity to ride a moving robot that intelligently knows which way you want to go based on your shifting weight.
Discover Australia's largest motion capture studio at the Burwood campus, which provides the kind of technology used by blockbusters such as Happy Feet and Lord of the Rings . Deakin IT students, especially our games design and development students, get a unique opportunity to use this facility as they learn to create games. At Burwood's open day you can also visit our CISCO labs and discover why CISCO certification can give you a real edge in getting a top IT job.
Engineering and IT can be difficult to define because they are so diverse and found in so many aspects of our daily lives. But they are critical career paths that make a difference to our society, and our courses help you develop great skills like problem solving and critical thinking, as well as many technical skills that will help you get a well-paid job. If you like science fiction, experimenting with computers, playing computer games, designing things, or even if you wonder why things work the way they do, chance are, engineering or IT might interest you.
On Open Day course information and advice is available all day. Come and talk to real-live engineering and IT students and qualified professionals and find out first-hand what kind of future you could have!
