
Professor David Stokes, PhD (Melbourne), BSc (Melbourne), Dip Ed (Melbourne), FEIANZ
After completing a PhD in the biological sciences and a Diploma of Education at the University of Melbourne, David Stokes travelled to England as the John and Eric Smythe Travelling Fellow, where he took up a Science Research Council Post Doctoral Fellowship with Dr D A Walker at Imperial College in London. This was followed by a second fellowship at the University of Sheffield.
David returned to Victoria to take up a position with the BSc (Education) program developed by Melbourne College and Melbourne University. In 1974 David accepted an appointment as Senior Lecturer in Biology at Rusden College of Advanced Education and in 1975 he accepted a position as Head of the Department of Environmental Studies. David spent six months at the Environment and Policy Institute at the East West Center in Hawaii before being appointed in 1982 as the Foundation Dean of the Faculty of Applied Science at Victoria College. In July 1992 David accepted an invitation to Chair a Working Party on Value Adding in Wood Products Industry in Victoria. At the time of the amalgamation of Deakin University with Victoria College in 1992 he was appointed as Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology, and he held this position for eight years until 2000.
More recently, David was a Director of the Victorian Schools Innovation Commission and Education Industry Director for Telstra. From 2004 - 2006, David worked with Professor John Catford on the Deakin Medical School project. He was appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) in November, 2006.
