The first stage in the planned rejuvenation of the Burwood Highway frontage, adjacent to the main entrance of the Melbourne Campus at Burwood, is scheduled to commence in June, with the demolition of several old buildings.
It is expected that the majority of the works will be completed by the beginning of semester 2 in late July.
Constructed in the 1950s as part of the former Burwood High School, the buildings have well exceeded their expected lifespan. They were originally scheduled for demolition several years ago; however, a sudden increase in staff numbers meant that the work had to be put on hold, and the buildings have since been fully occupied. With the completion of the International Centre and Business Building, the University can now vacate these buildings and clear the site.
There are no plans for further development of the area at this stage, other than car parking or landscaping. As this area is adjacent to the main entrance to the Melbourne Campus at Burwood, careful consideration will be given to how the land is used in the future.
